Acupuncture

A natural, drug-free approach for relieving pain in cats and dogs with arthritis and other issues. Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body to release endorphins, serotonin and natural opioids, and it is often a very successful tool for arthritis management in cats and dogs.

Who it is forCats and dogs with arthritis, chronic pain, or anything where you would rather not add another drug.
What to expectInitial treatment sessions are generally best at weekly or bi-weekly intervals, then adjusted to the duration that works well for each animal.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care focuses on the role of the spine and nervous system in maintaining joint health. Adjustments help correct misalignments that disrupt neurological communication between the brain, organ systems and tissues. Many dogs and cats experience excellent results and sometimes dramatically improved mobility and comfort.

Who it is forDogs and cats whose movement has changed, who are holding themselves oddly, or who have lost range in a joint.
What to expectDr. Rod Block became certified by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association in 2002 and has provided holistic animal chiropractic care for more than 23 years.

Aquapractic was developed by Dr. Rod Block. It takes the principles of animal chiropractic and performs them in the heated swimming pool, and it is offered exclusively here at the Animal Wellness Center of OC.

Who it is forDogs who need chiropractic work but do their best moving in water rather than on a table.
What to expectHolistic chiropractic takes the whole being into account, including posture and relationship to the environment.

Hydrotherapy & Aquatic Conditioning

Hydrotherapy is used for the treatment of chronic conditions, post-operative recovery, and pre-operative or general fitness. Combined with veterinary treatment it can significantly improve the quality and rate of healing following surgery or traumatic injury. Controlled swimming improves cardiovascular stamina, muscle tone and range of movement.

Who it is forPost-surgical dogs, dogs recovering from a sprain or strain, and healthy dogs who need low-impact conditioning.
What to expectAquatic conditioning including swim lessons and fun swims is also great preventive healthcare. Swimming is excellent aerobic exercise for low-impact body conditioning, fitness and weight loss, and builds strength without harming bones or joints.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy works with light wavelength energy to support healing and decrease pain. This is achieved by increasing blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues, which reduces inflammation.

What to expectLaser therapy sessions are generally done once or twice each week for best results, depending on your pet’s needs.

Shockwave Therapy

The PiezoWave shockwave, also known as acoustic compression therapy, can help decrease pain and increase mobility. It uses acoustic waves to mechanically stimulate deep tissues in a focused manner, and is used for acute and chronic bone, joint and tendon injuries.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy increases blood circulation, brings strength to weak muscles, disperses muscle tension and restores proper mobility and flexibility. For rehabilitation from injury it improves strength, prevents muscle atrophy, reduces pain and increases range of motion.

Who it is forPets rehabilitating from injury, pets carrying tension, and pets who simply need to unwind.
What to expectDogs and cats can greatly benefit from massage and many enjoy it. You can also do simple massage techniques yourself at home, and we will show you how.

Nutrition & Chinese Herbs

Nutrition plays a vital role in pet health and is one of the most important aspects of total body health. Optimizing diet and supplementing appropriately can have a profound effect in helping your pet overcome disease states or preventing cancer and inflammatory conditions. Leveraging Traditional Chinese Medicine, issues ranging from arthritis to immune disorders can be addressed with Chinese herbs and acupuncture.

Who it is forEvery pet we see, because diet changes what the rest of the plan can achieve.
What to expectOur veterinarians discuss diet options in the initial evaluation. Chinese herbs are generally well received by pets and can be an independent treatment or a complement to other therapies.

Questions About Treatment

We do not publish prices, because the plan is set after the evaluation and no two pets need the same thing. Call (949) 534-4654 and we will walk you through what your pet's plan would involve and what it costs before you commit to anything.

Every pet goes through a thorough evaluation by one of our seasoned veterinarians before any treatment program can begin. That evaluation is where the plan comes from, so bring any surgical notes, imaging or medication lists you have. Nothing is started before we understand what is happening.

No. Our integrative and holistic therapies complement Western medicine with a gentle, alternative approach. We work alongside your regular veterinarian, and you do not need a referral to book an evaluation with us.

Our treatments are designed to bring comfort and tranquility to your pet, calming their anxiety and giving you peace of mind, and our facility has separate treatment rooms. Ask when you book so we can set the appointment up the way that works best for your pet.

Most plans combine two to four. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs work together, hydrotherapy and rehabilitation work together, and laser reduces the inflammation that makes the rest possible. The evaluation decides the combination. You can also try our care plan finder to see where we would likely start.

Acupuncture, chiropractic care, laser therapy, massage therapy, nutrition and Chinese herbs are all used with cats. Acupuncture in particular is often a very successful tool for arthritis management in cats. The pool-based therapies, hydrotherapy and Aquapractic, are for dogs.

Hydrotherapy is conditioning and rehabilitation in water, using controlled swimming and the underwater treadmill to build stamina, muscle tone and range of movement. Aquapractic is animal chiropractic performed in the heated pool, developed by Dr. Rod Block and offered exclusively at the Animal Wellness Center of OC.
